Oder flood 2010

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oder flood in 2010 was one of the largest floods in the Oder since water level records began. Since all three riparian states had made huge efforts to protect against flooding after the disastrous flood of the Oder in 1997 , the damage remained far below that of summer 1997. At the same time and due to the same precipitation event, the Vistula catchment area was also hit by a catastrophic flood with huge damage and loss of Human life.

In the upper Oder catchment area, the flood became the second largest since the end of the war . In the period from May 15 to 20, 2010, 350 to 370 mm of rain fell in the Czech catchment area of the Oder. This quickly led to the formation of extreme floods.

At the Czech-Polish border, the second highest flow rate since records began was registered on May 17, at around 2100 cubic meters per second. In 1997 more than 2800 cubic meters per second came here to the drain. The third largest flood is that of August 1985 with 1155 cubic meters per second.

The Buków flooding polder (Oder-km 29–32.5), completed in 2002, was opened in the night of May 17-18 and relieved the Oder by approx. 300 cubic meters per second, so that the discharge in the Oder was 74% to 63% of the peak discharge of 1997 could be reduced.

At the lower level of the Oder River in Miedonia, the high on May 18 was 1.6 m below the high of 1997, but it is still the second highest water level recorded there since 1947.
