Live and act
Odette Myrtil was born the daughter of two stage actors and developed into a very good violinist and singer at an early age . She was already on the Parisian vaudeville stages at an early age . In 1915, at the age of just 16, she came to the United States as one of the "Ziegfeld Girls" of the legendary Ziegfeld Follies . Myrtil performed in many large European cities and celebrated a great success in London's West End with the Reveu The Bing Boys Are Here . From the mid-1920s to the mid-1930s she was often active on Broadway .
Odette Myrtil was seen in around 30 American films between 1923 and 1971, mostly playing characters of French origin and fashion saleswomen in supporting roles . After appearing as a Parisian socialite in the Sinclair-Lewis film adaptation of the novel, Time of Love, Time of Farewell to William Wyler in 1936, many other Hollywood roles followed, especially until the mid-1950s, such as in the Oscar-winning drama Miss Kitty (1940 ) alongside Ginger Rogers , in the musical film Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) with James Cagney and in the John Wayne West In the Last Second (1949). In 1954 she presented the eponymous song The Last Time I Saw Paris in the role of a singer in the film Back then in Paris . In addition, she worked for a total of nine Hollywood films between 1944 and 1950 as a costume designer, for example, she specially designed film costumes for actresses such as Dorothy Lamour and Kay Francis .
In the mid-1950s, Myrtil moved to the small town of New Hope , Pennsylvania , where she ran two restaurants until she retired in 1976. Her restaurant, Chez Odette, was a popular destination from 1961, and even after she sold it in 1976, other people continued to run it until the end of the 2000s. She died in November 1978 at the age of 80.
