Ufer im Nebel is an American detective film in the style of film noir by Anatole Litvak from 1941. The screenplay is based on the play Liebe Menschen (Original title: The Gentle People ) by Irwin Shaw . In Germany, the film premiered on television ( ARD ) on December 28, 1963 .

action

Brooklyn's Jonah Goodwin and Olaf Johnson take a break from work fishing. Both dream of buying a big boat so they can fish in the gulf. Jonah's daughter Stella is dating auctioneer George Watkins. But Stella is dissatisfied with the boring George. She meets Harold Goff, a crook who impresses her. What Stella doesn't know is that Harold is extorting protection money from Jonah and Olaf. As security, he had the two of them sign a pleading in which the cash payments were declared as repayment of betting debts.

Goff uses the money to buy perfume for Stella. To get Stella away from Goff, Jonah promises her a trip to Cuba, which he wants to pay for with the money he and Olaf have saved for the bigger boat. Goff finds out about it and offers Stella to bring her to Cuba herself. He demands that Jonah surrender the savings. Jonah is angry and takes Goff to the police. There Goff shows the signed letter, whereupon the judge has to release him.

Stella tells her father that she wants to go to Cuba with Goff. Jonah and Olaf decide to kill Goff. They lure Goff onto the boat. There they want to knock him down and throw him overboard, but Olaf does not bring the attack over his heart. Goff goes overboard in an accident and drowns. Jonah finds Goff's wallet with the savings. After Goff's body is found, the police look for the missing wallet. The officers search the boat, but they can't find anything because Jonah threw the wallet in the water. When the officers leave, Jonah takes the wallet out of the water. On the bank they invite a contrite Stella to go fishing in the gulf.

background

The climax of the film differs significantly from the stage play. Goff was killed on the stage. As it was not welcomed by the authorities that a murderer gets away with impunity in a film, the screenplay, unlike the play, had to be rewritten, so that Goff dies in an accident.

Goff was supposed to be played by Humphrey Bogart . But Ida Lupino, who was better known than Bogart at the time, had made two films with him and did not get along with him. At her instigation, John Garfield was hired in place of Bogart.

Carl Jules Weyl, born in Stuttgart , was the set designer. Assistant Director Lee Katz was a founding member of the Directors Guild of America .

Reviews

"Their impotent rebellion, which has risen to the point of attempted murder, serves as the starting point for an atmospherically dense" film noir "offshoot, which, however, strikes an all too vague and soothing song of praise for simple-minded, poor people who come to terms with the injustices inflicted on them."
