action

In 1904 the three sisters Louise, Helen and Grace Elliott in a small town in Montana tried to marry a well-off man each. Above all, Helen, the prettiest of the three, longs for a glamorous life by the side of a wealthy man. At a ball to mark the presidential election, Louise, the eldest, meets San Francisco- based sports reporter Frank Medlin. For both of them it is love at first sight and only a few days later they surprisingly announce their wedding plans. Against her parents' wishes, Louise moves to San Francisco as Frank's wife. Her two sisters are also getting married. While Grace finds a suitable partner in Tom Knivel and gives him a son, Helen opts for the older, but very rich Sam Johnson, whom she does not love, but who is ready to fulfill all of her wishes.

Louise and Frank love each other very much, but Frank's professional failures increasingly weigh on their marriage. As a reporter, he earns little money and the novel he always wanted to write is never finished. He starts drinking out of frustration, but wants to stop when Louise is expecting a child. After a boxing match, about which Frank is supposed to write a report, he wants to bring Louise, who accompanied him, home. However, Louise insists that he do his job and goes alone. On the way to her apartment, Louise suddenly collapses and has a miscarriage. Frank is devastated and blames himself for the misfortune. He starts drinking again.

Faced with numerous unpaid bills and the realization that he doesn't even have enough money to buy Louise a Christmas present, Frank goes to his boss to ask for more salary. But his boss fires him because Frank drinks too much for him and his work suffers as a result. When Louise wants to improve her financial situation and take a job in William Benson's department store, Frank feels all the more pangs of conscience about not being able to offer his wife the life she deserves. Out of hurt pride, he forbids her to accept the position. Both get into an argument, whereupon Frank pulls away and gets drunk. While he still hasn't found a new job after a few months, Louise thrives in her work as a secretary. Out of shame and guilt, Frank wants to leave San Francisco. He hires on a ship and sails off that same night as a simple sailor. The next day, San Francisco was hit by a violent earthquake and Louise's apartment was also destroyed by the force of nature. Louise herself and her friend Flora save themselves to Oakland , where they are taken in by Flora's mother. When Frank heard of the disaster by radio, he wanted to turn back immediately, but the captain of his ship refused to change course.

After two years, San Francisco is almost completely rebuilt and Louise is back working for William Benson. When she learns from her sister Grace that she has been betrayed by her husband Tom, Louise travels to her hometown in Montana on short notice. Helen also arrives to assist Grace. Ultimately, Louise convinces Grace to give Tom another chance. Meanwhile, Frank arrives at the port of San Francisco. When he learns that Louise is in Montana, he follows her. Another ball was held there on the occasion of the presidential election in 1908. When Frank and Louise meet again, they happily hug each other and decide to try again.
