Arthur Hoyt
Arthur Hoyt (born March 19, 1874 in Georgetown , Colorado , † January 4, 1953 in Woodland Hills , California ) was an American actor and director.
life and career
Arthur Hoyt got into the acting business with the help of his uncle, a playwright , and initially played for various theater companies. He also worked as a theater director. In 1905 he made his Broadway debut in The Prince Consort , which was soon canceled. As a result, he only played twice on Broadway until 1911, without really having much success. In 1914, Hoyt made his film debut and quickly received major supporting roles in Hollywood's silent film era. For his younger brother, the director Harry O. Hoyt , he appeared in 1925 in his silent film The Lost World as Professor Summerlee. In 1918, Hoyt tried to direct two smaller films himself, but returned to acting.
He made the leap to talkies a few years later: he continued to be a busy supporting actor and played in two dozen films in 1934 alone. However, Hoyt's roles became noticeably smaller and more and more often he was not mentioned in the credits for his appearances . In talkies, the skinny little actor was mostly limited to portraying weak and suppressed characters who had to grapple with larger or smaller problems. He had one of his best-known roles as the confused motel owner Zeke in the screwball classic It Happened in One Night (1934). Hoyt was also one of the favorite actors of the director Preston Sturges , who used him in all of his films between 1940 and 1947. He played, among other things, the Mayor Thillinghast in Sturges satire The Great McGinty (1940).
After around 290 films, he ended his career as an actor in 1947. He died six years later at the age of 78 and is buried in the Chapel of the Pines Crematory cemetery in Los Angeles .
