Jane Bryan (born Jane O'Brien ; born June 11, 1918 in Hollywood , California - † April 8, 2009 in Pebble Beach, Monterey County , California) was an American actress .

Jane O'Brien grew up in Hollywood and attended an acting workshop with Jean Muir , where she was discovered by a Hollywood agent. In 1936 she got a studio contract with Warner Brothers and soon she played under the artist surname Bryan at the side of world stars such as Bette Davis , Edward G. Robinson , James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart . In addition to some conventional roles as a nice young girl, she also got some more complex roles: for example, as Bette Davis' sister, who gets caught in the clutches of prostitution, in Murder in the Nightclub (1937) and as the illegitimate lover of Paul Muni's married doctor in You not alone (1939). Bryan received a lot of praise for her film appearances - as Noël Coward called her "America's Best Young Actress" - and Warner Brothers planned to make Bryan a big star.

Her promising acting career ended in 1940 after only 18 films. The reason was her marriage to Justin Whitlock Dart senior (1907-1984), the president of a drugstore chain, after which she retired into private life. They remained married until Dart's death in 1984 and had three children. The Republican couple were close friends with Ronald Reagan and had an advisory role in his decision to embark on a political career. Jane O'Brien died in 2009 at the age of 90 after a lengthy illness.
