Murder in the Nightclub (Original Title: Marked Woman ) is an American drama from 1937 starring Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart .

action

Mary Dwight Stauber works as a nightclub hostess for the notorious gangster Johnny Vanning. She befriends Ralph Krawford, who confesses that he doesn't have the money to pay off his gambling debts. Mary warns him that he is in great danger. She is shocked but not surprised after learning shortly after that Ralph was murdered by Charlie Delaney, an ally of Vanning.

According to District Attorney David Graham, Mary and the other women refuse to prosecute Vanning. They fear its retribution and are powerless to free themselves from its influence. Mary's younger sister Betty comes to visit. Without being aware of the dangerous situation she is in, she behaves recklessly - against the advice of her older sister. When she is killed, Mary agrees to testify against Vanning.

She is beaten up by his thugs and is disfigured, as the film title suggests ( Marked Woman ). Even so, this strengthens their determination to testify. Since the other women know that they can only live freely if they testify, they agree with Mary and also testify against Vanning.
