Eduardo Ciannelli (also Cianelli , Americanized Edward Ciannelli ; born August 30, 1889 in Ischia , † October 8, 1969 in Rome ) was an Italian actor .

Life

Ciannelli studied medicine at the University of Naples , but broke it off shortly before the start of the First World War to go on a European tour with an opera company. After the war he settled in the United States and starred in a musical comedy at the Liberty Theater in New York City . His Broadway debut was in the musical Rose Marie in 1925; For a short time he was also active as an author. More and more he developed into an actor and appeared in Ben Hecht's The Front Page in 1928 .

He made his film debut in 1933 and initially repeated his roles in successful stage plays twice (1933 and 1936). He then turned himself to the film, where he soon (mostly as a villain) as a reliable, sober and concise supporting actor in numerous films, including a number of serial was occupied. At the end of 1948 Ciannelli returned to Italy and continued his film career in the Cinecittà , but continued to appear in American-made films.

Ciannelli's son was the actor and dialogue director Lewis C. Ciannelli (1923–1990).
