Odo van Maelcote

Odo van Maelcote (born July 28, 1572 in Brussels , † March 14, 1615 in Rome ) was a Belgian Jesuit , astronomer and mathematician who taught at the Collegio Romano in Rome.

Maelcote became a novice in the Jesuit order in Tournai in 1590 . He studied in Douai with François d'Aguilon, among others . At the invitation of Christophorus Clavius ​​he came to Rome, where he became Christoph Grienberger's assistant at the Collegio Romano . In addition to mathematics, he also taught Hebrew there.

In 1610 the mathematicians of the Collegio Romano Clavius, Grienberger and van Maelcote were asked by church superiors to comment on the discoveries made by Galileo Galilei with his telescope. The opinion was positive and at a banquet in the Collegio Romano Maelcote gave an eulogy for Galileo who was present on May 18, 1611. In 1611 he was back in Brussels, but returned to Rome, where he died relatively young.
