Oeceoclades seychellarum is an extinct species of orchid that was endemic to the Seychelles island of Mahé .
features
Oeceoclades seychellarum was an epiphytic orchid with a creeping trunk. The pointed, egg-shaped leaves, arranged in pairs, were up to 12 cm long. The thin, up to 30 cm long panicles had delicate flowers on stems. Each flower was up to 8 mm long, had yellowish-white petals and sepals, white lips, a few light purple stripes on the flower tube and a short spur. The median lobe of the lip was kidney-shaped in outline and a quarter of the length of the entire lip. The side lobes were broadly rounded at the tip of the shoot. The thin capsules were 2 cm long. The vegetative characteristics of Oeceoclades seychellarum were identical to the species Oeceoclades lanceata native to the island of Madagascar . There are differences in the flower structures, especially in the shape and proportions of the lip.
status
Oeceoclades seychellarum was "extinct" in 2011 by the IUCN in the categories ( extinct ) classified. The species is only known from the type specimen that Hans Paul Thomasset, owner of the Seychelles Coconut and Rubber Company, collected in May 1902 in the Cascade Estate on Mahé. The type locality has been severely impaired by human colonization and invasive plant species.
Systematics
The first scientific description was made in 1928 under the name Eulophia seychellarum by Victor Samuel Summerhayes based on the work of the botanist Robert Allen Rolfe, who died in 1921 . In 1957 the species was placed in the genus Eulophididum by Summerhayes . The transfer to the current genus Oeceoclades was made by Leslie Andrew Garay and Peter Taylor in 1976.
