Rampion is an offshore wind farm in the UK in the English Channel that has been in operation since April 2018 . It is the first wind farm on the south coast of England and is located 13 kilometers south of the Sussex coast . The investment volume is put at a total of 1.3 billion British pounds. The wind farm supplies 345,000 households with electricity.

Development and construction

The development of the wind farm started in 2010. In 2012, the citizens were involved in the project. Approval for the project was granted in July 2014. At the end of August 2016, 55 of the 116 foundations were installed. All foundations were installed by the beginning of November 2016. On March 10, 2017, the first turbine was installed on the MPI Discovery installation ship. For the installation, the turbines were transported from Esbjerg in Denmark to the construction site. The last wind turbine was installed in mid-September 2017, while the cable laying and other work were still in progress. Trial operation was planned for the end of 2017. The wind farm was commissioned in April 2018.

technology

The 116 Vestas V112-3.45 MW turbines have a combined installed capacity of 400 MW. The wind turbines have a hub height of 85 meters and a total height of 140 meters. The minimum distance between the individual systems is 750 meters.

Network connection

The electricity is collected on a transformer platform and transported to the land via a 150 kilovolt submarine cable .

business

The project is supported by E.ON , the UK Green Investment Bank and the Canadian energy company Enbridge .
