Ogallala is a placement game by Rudi Hoffmann and in Germany in three different versions from three publishers. The first version dates from 1975 and is by Pelikan , the second version was released by ASS in 1988 and the card game was published by Amigo- Verlag in 2002 . According to the publisher, it is aimed at people aged 6 to 99. The versions differ somewhat in terms of the rules, the rating and the number of cards. The version by Pelikan contains 98 cards, ASS has 134 and Amigo has 112.

Rules of the game

The aim of the game is to be the first to build three complete canoes and to prevent other players from doing so. The cards represent boat parts, Indians and treasures. A canoe consists of a bow and stern as well as middle parts (with a pelican up to 14). The players alternately draw cards and place them on the templates (for Pelikan and ASS). Even here you can disturb your opponents. The archer shoots strangers, the lasso thrower catches treasure. If you have completed a canoe and it has a higher attack value than an opposing one, you can sink it. The treasures are hidden and the Indians are discarded. A totem in the canoe, however, protects against attacks.

With the treasures there are combinations of two and three, which of course have different values (in the pelican version: bear hunter + bear + bear = 200; individually only 50 points each). As soon as a player has finished his third boat, he can declare the end of the game. Now both the values of the cards and the size of the complete canoe are scored. For professional players there are even more detailed variants for attacks and several Indian tribes.

rating

Ogallala is a game where you have to rely on luck. However, certain advance planning and strategies are possible, if only to a limited extent. The currently strongest player will always be the victim of attacks, so that the others can catch up in between. A game comprises several rounds and can last up to an hour.

variants

In addition to the standard edition, Pelikan also published the game as a book edition. In addition to the three variants of Pelikan (1975), ASS (1988) and Amigo (2002), the game was released by Waddingtons in 1977 as Up The Creek and in 1980 as Blackfeet - The Great Indian Canoe Game . In Italy, Ogallala appeared at Dal Negro . A computer game version was published by Koch Media in 2004 and won 2nd place in the casual game category at the German Developer Award that year .
