Ogun (record label)

Ogun is a British independent record label that releases British and South African avant-garde jazz .

The label, named after the voodoo god Ogun , was founded by Hazel and Harry Miller with sound engineer Keith Beal in 1974. The initial spark was the concert recording of Chris McGregor's successful Brotherhood of Breath from Willisau , which turned out to be unreliable on the established labels. To this day, the label documents on the one hand South African jazz musicians connected to the London scene such as Louis Moholo or Pule Pheto , on the other hand projects of important protagonists of contemporary jazz from Great Britain such as Keith Tippett , Elton Dean or Harry Beckett . For example, Ogun released the work of the legendary saxophone trion SOS by John Surman , Mike Osborne and Alan Skidmore , but also the record of the vocal quartet Voices with Julie Tippetts , Maggie Nicols , Phil Minton and Brian Ely. During the production of some records, a. also the music producer and promoter John Jack worked, whose record label or distributor Cadillac was associated with Ogun.

After the label was rather inactive at the end of the 1980s, parts of the back-up catalog are now being released on CD in addition to new releases. Hazel Miller and John Jack of Cadillac Music co- run the label .
