Oisu (German Oiso ) is a village ( Estonian alevik ) in the Estonian rural municipality Türi in Järva County .

Description and history

Oisu is 14 kilometers south of Paide . The village has 410 inhabitants (as of 2006).

The Oisu Manor was founded in the 17th century. In 1851 today's manor house was built in the style of late classicism . The middle part of the mansion was two-story, the two side wings one-story. The last owner before the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform in 1919 was the Baltic German baroness Amalie Rausch von Traubenberg. As early as 1912, a large part of the land was acquired by a Russian bank, which divided up the area and sold it to Estonian farmers.

From the 1960s to 1980s, the manor house served as an administrative building for the local Estonia kolkhoz farm . In addition, the culture house and the local history museum were housed in it. The mansion was heavily rebuilt. The side wings were raised to two storeys.

The three hectare park of the Oisu estate with its historic trees has largely been preserved. Inside is a granite memorial created by the architect Allan Murdmaa and the sculptor Juhan Paberit , dedicated to all Estonians who fell “for freedom” between 1918 and 1949.

The Oisu Community Museum ( Oisu vallamuuseum ), which opened in the summer of 1995, shows numerous exhibits on the local history of the place. Part of the museum is dedicated to the writer Jaan Lintrop (1885–1962) and the Estonian racing driver and politician Toivo Asmer (* 1947).
