Okinaka Shigeo

Okinaka Shigeo ( Japanese 沖 中 重 雄 ; born October 8, 1902 in Ishikawa Prefecture ; died April 20, 1992 ) was a Japanese internist and neurologist.

Live and act

Okinaka Shigeo graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Tōkyō University and was hired there in 1931 as an assistant. From 1931 he stayed for further training in the USA and in Europe. In 1943 he became assistant professor, in 1945 professor.

Okinaka conducted studies to clarify the regulation of fluids in the body, to clarify the disorders of the cerebral blood vessels and the autonomic nervous system of various internal organs. Okinaka worked with his teacher Kure Ken (1883-1940) to clarify the management of the spinal parasympathetic nervous system. Okinaka also carried out a large number of autopsies to compare them with clinical reports. He was director of the Toranomon Hospital in Tōkyō.

In 1961, Okinaka was awarded the Imperial Prize (恩賜 賞, Onshi-shō) of the Academy of Sciences . In 1970 he was honored as a person with special cultural merits and was awarded the Order of Culture in the same year . He also served as one of the four vice presidents of the World Federation of Neurology. After his death, the Toranomon Hospital was renamed the "Okinaka Memory Research Institute for Aging Diseases" (冲 中 記念 成人 病 研究所, Okinaka kinen seijinbyō kenkyūjo).
