Open Knowledge SImulation MOdeling (OKSIMO) is a simulation software based on the Factor Connector Language (FCL) developed by the Institute for New Media eV Frankfurt , which has been made available to a broader public since April 2009 as part of the OKSIMO project and on Planet Earth Simulator (PES) project builds up. The name OKSIMO is registered as a trademark .

The project is being driven forward under the leadership of Gerd Döben-Henisch , a computer science professor at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences .

The open source simulation software developed as part of several diploma theses is available for free download. The source code of the software is also available on the Internet. To support the further development of the software, a Bugzilla portal was set up for OKSIMO in which software errors are documented.

OKSIMO components

Program components

OKSIMO essentially consists of two program components, the OKSIMO FCL Editor and the ForSYnt- based OKSIMO Simulator CLI, with which the models created in the FCL Editor can be simulated. Individual models created with the FCL Editor can be integrated into a higher-level model using drag and drop , according to the user manual, which is also supplied with the download as a PDF file .

Model libraries

OKSIMO models can be saved both locally and in a central model database, which is technically supported by Hessisches Telemedia Technologie Kompetenz-Center eV . The list of existing models currently appears to be relatively limited, but should gradually increase over the course of the project.

Built-in library

The system currently includes an OKSIMO built-in library with prefabricated models for further use, for example in your own models. This includes various basic models, which are arranged according to the following topics:

Logic Model Library

OKSIMO also comes with a library called Logic Model (LModel for short), which currently contains the following models:

There are also working instructions for artificial neural networks as well as model examples for simulating the future:

Example models from the PES project

The OKSIMO download package also contains the following local example models that still originate from the original PES project from OKSIMO:

Areas of application

OKSIMO is kept very open and general and can therefore be used, for example, to simulate neural processes in the brain or to model population development in a city.
