history

In 1962, on the initiative of the artist's widow, Dagny Björnsson-Gulbransson, a donor association was founded in Tegernsee to build the museum. Federal President Theodor Heuss and Federal Chancellor Ludwig Erhard took over the patronage . On May 31, 1966, the museum was opened in the Tegernsee spa garden. In 1973 the building and, as the Olaf Gulbransson Foundation, a significant part of the exhibits were transferred to the Free State of Bavaria . The museum became a branch gallery of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen . The management and operation of the museum was taken over by the Olaf Gulbransson Gesellschaft eV Tegernsee in agreement with the Bavarian State Painting Collections.

Thanks to the Walter Kames Foundation established on August 31, 2007, the Olaf Gulbransson Gesellschaft eV Tegernsee has since had access to over a third of Honoré Daumier's lithographic work . Special exhibitions with a thematic focus are shown in the graphics cabinet.

architecture

The museum , opened in 1966 , a pavilion building with an open atrium at the time, was designed by Sep Ruf , who realized several buildings on Tegernsee during these years , including an extension to the historic Schererhof , where Gulbransson had lived. In 1993 the museum was expanded to include an underground exhibition space. In 2007/2008 a new building was built next to the museum, largely underground in the spa gardens. In addition to a new entrance with cash register and shop, it includes two exhibition rooms as well as storage and administration rooms. Following this, the Ruf building was renovated in accordance with the preservation of historical monuments and expanded in line with contemporary exhibition conditions.
