Olav Nygard (born July 10, 1884 in Modalen , Norway , † February 11, 1924 ) was a Norwegian poet .

Life

Olav Nygard was the second youngest of ten children of the farmer couple Simon Nygard and Brita Florvåg. His mother died when he was ten years old and he had to work on his parents' Kross farm in Modalen. After elementary school he attended the district school Nordhordland from 1903 and from 1907 the Møre Folkehøgskule in Ørsta. In 1906 he completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and did his military service before returning to Folkehøgskule . In 1909 he moved to Oslo and lived there with the writers Arne and Hulda Garborg . He earned his living as a day laborer and with contributions to Norwegian newspapers.

In 1912 he married Rakel Tvedt, the daughter of a farmer. Nygard's financial position remained precarious; from 1913 he published several volumes of poetry, but his poetry did not make a difference. So he tried to support his family with agriculture. The Nygards ran farms in Eksingedalen (1915/1916), Lindås (1916-1918), Horvei (1918-1922) and finally in Østre Aker (from 1922). In 1924, Olav Nygard died of tuberculosis .

Nygard wrote only poetry in the romantic and idealistic tradition. He wrote in Nynorsk and used many archaic and self-assembled words that make his work difficult to access.

  • Runemaal , 1914, Gula Tidend
  • Kvæde , 1915, Gula Tidend

In addition, Nygard translated poems by Robert Burns into Norwegian.
