The Old Bridge of Ellon is a former road bridge in the Scottish village of Ellon in the Council Area of Aberdeenshire . In 1971 the bridge was included in the Scottish Monument List in the highest monument category A.

history

The construction of the Old Bridge of Ellon probably began in August 1791. For the erection of the arches, the falsework of a now defunct bridge in Inverurie was shipped to Ellon. In 1793 the viaduct was completed. It is the last remaining bridge structure by the Banff- based stonemason James Robertson . It is possible that the construction was financed entirely by private individuals, with George Gordon, 3rd Earl of Aberdeen acting as a major donor. With the construction of a new bridge a few meters upstream, today's Old Bridge of Ellon became obsolete in 1944. It once led the A92 over the Ythan.

description

The masonry viaduct made of roughly hewn quarry stone spans the Ythan with three lined segmental arches with keystones . While the two flanking arches have a span of 13 meters, the central arch is 14 meters. The width of the carriageway between the flanking parapets is 4.9 meters. The pillars are designed with pointed icebreakers .
