Old Clock Tower Lighthouse ( Sinhalese කොලඹ පැරණි ප්රදීපාගාරය ) is a clock tower ( English Clock Tower ) and former lighthouse ( English Lighthouse ) in Colombo , the capital of Sri Lanka .
The 29 m high and square masonry was built in 1860 as a clock tower in the center of Colombo. Five years later the lantern was added and the building was also put into operation as a lighthouse in 1865. When the beacon was increasingly obscured by surrounding buildings, the decision was made in 1952 to build a new lighthouse on the city's waterfront .
