Wilhelm Kläger (born December 25, 1814 in Berlin , † August 4, 1875 in Braunschweig ) was a German actor , director and playwright . He worked at numerous German theaters from 1835 to 1875.

Life

Wilhelm Kläger was born in Berlin in 1814, according to other sources in 1817. He was originally supposed to be a theologian , but was so impressed by the actor Ludwig Devrient that he switched to the theater. Kläger made his debut at the Hamburg City Theater in 1835 . From 1837 to 1845 he worked at the Kassel court theater . This was followed by an engagement at the Mannheim Court Theater from 1845 to 1849 . He went through several theater stations, including Breslau, Leipzig, Magdeburg, Budapest and Berlin, before joining the Darmstadt Court Theater from 1858 to 1867 . There he resigned in 1867, worked as an actor in Braunschweig in 1869, followed by positions in Hamburg, Weißenfels, Graz and Vienna.

Kläger died on August 4, 1875 in Braunschweig and was buried in the St. Magnifriedhof there in the presence of representatives of the court theater .

The then well-known character actor Kläger, often referred to as "brilliant" in contemporary reviews, shone in his star roles as Shylock in The Merchant of Venice , Franz Moor in The Robbers , Mephisto in Faust and Nathan in Nathan the Wise . His career has been marred by alcohol problems, which have been marked by layoffs and second- and third-rate engagements. His often unpredictable, often humorous escapades for theater directors and directors have been handed down in contemporary anecdotes.

family

Kläger married the actress Albertine Spahn on July 24, 1840 in Hamburg. She died on February 12, 1865 in Darmstadt. The couple had a daughter, the court actress Marie Hasemann-Kläger.
