The Old Naval Observatory is a former observatory in Washington, DC that was used by the United States Navy from 1844 to 1893 . Under the direction of Matthew Fontaine Maury , it has become one of the most internationally recognized research institutes in the field of oceanography .

The building remained in the possession of the Navy, which operated the Naval Museum of Hygiene there from 1894 to 1902 . It was used as a hospital from 1903 and remained in use until the National Naval Medical Center was completed in 1942. Until 2012 it was an administrative building of the Surgeon General of the United States Navy , since then the building has belonged to the United States Department of State . At least at times, the building's premises were used as apartments, including for US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and James Mattis . The building is generally not open to the public.

It has been a National Historic Landmark since January 12, 1965 . On October 15, 1966, the entry in the National Register of Historic Places followed .
