Old Parish Church of St. Mary

The Old Parish Church of St. Mary is a former church building in the Scottish town of Kirkintilloch in East Dunbartonshire . The structure is in the north of the city at the junction of West High Street and Cowgate . In 1971 the Old Parish Church of St. Mary was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.

history

The church history at this place can be traced back to the year 1140. At that time there was also a chapel dedicated to St. Mary in this place. The parish church of the Parish was located in the east of the city at the location of the current cemetery (see Auld Aisle Cemetery ). The old chapel was demolished in 1644 in favor of the Church of St. Mary, which was used as a parish church until 1914. Due to structural deficiencies, the construction of a new church was suggested at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1914, the St. Mary Parish Church was finally completed and the old church building was no longer used. This building is also listed and classified in category B. Today the old church building houses a museum.

description

The church building has a cross-shaped floor plan. It ends with gable roofs , the gables of which are worked as a stepped gable . The bell tower is isolated north of the church. The Kirkintilloch customs office and town hall were once located at its location. Due to a road widening, buildings had to be removed, which is why the tower is no longer connected to the church building.
