description

The year of construction of the Old Parish Church of St Congan is unknown. It should stand on the site of the house of worship that Saint Congan built. In 1214 the church was assigned to the Benedictine Abbey of Arbroath Abbey .

The church building was relatively long with a length of 36.5 m and a width of 5.5 m. Its masonry is made of quarry stone . Today a 16 m long fragment of the east-facing choir is still preserved. On the inner walls there are three monuments that are dated to the year 1580 and the 17th century respectively. A sculptured plate originally from Turriffs Hospital shows ten people, including the Earl of Buchan . A roof turret with two chambers sits on the preserved gable . He carries the bells open; a bell from 1556. The clock installed in 1828 was brought from Carnoustie to Turriff in 1797 .

The earliest tombstones in the surrounding cemetery date from the late 17th century. The cemetery gate, established in the late 17th century, is pilastrated . Its wrought iron gate was made in the early 19th century.
