Old St. Raymond's Church
Old St. Raymond's Church is a historic church in Dublin , California . The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on April 12, 2006 .
The oldest surviving Catholic Church in Alameda County and Contra Costa Counties was built in 1859 and consecrated in 1860. The structure stands on the northeast corner of a 16,000 square meter property. The land was donated to the Church and also served the historic Old Murray Schoolhouse and Dublin Pioneer Cemetery .
The church is in a simple neo-Gothic style and the facade is clad in white New England clapboard . The wooden pews and white plank floors are made of redwood . The wood for the construction of the chapel comes from the mountains around Oakland ; the tree trunks were brought to Dublin in carts of oxen to be sawn here. The structure was built by Irish immigrants who left their homes before the Great Famine and lived in New York City for some time before joining the early wagon trains west. During construction, Tom Donlon fell to his death on September 6, 1859, becoming the first person to be buried in Dublin Pioneer Cemetery.
Originally it was a Christian mission church. However, local residents could not afford a permanent priest, so a member of the Oakland clergy would ride a mule to St. Raymond's once a month to read Holy Mass . The first wedding was closed in 1865, the bell tower was added to the building in 1880.
In 1966, the parish moved to a larger structure, also called St. Raymond's Church, and the Diocese of Oakland gave the old building to the Amador-Livermore Valley Historical Society (ALVHS) for conservation and restoration. This association used the structure for various purposes and sold it to the City of Dublin in 1993. The city was also able to purchase the adjoining Old Murray Schoolhouse and Dublin Pioneer Cemetery, thereby identifying the Dublin Heritage Center. The first documented renovation of Old St. Raymond's Church took place in 1922, and the last so far occurred a short time after the city acquired the structure. The general appearance of the church has not changed since it was built in 1859.
