The Old State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield (Illinois) is the fifth state capitol in the American state of Illinois, now serving as a museum .
It was built 1837–40 and served as the Illinois State Parliament from 1840–1876, until the function moved into the new Illinois State Capitol . Abraham Lincoln announced his presidential candidacy here in 1858 , Barack Obama his in 2007 .
Abraham Lincoln served here as a member of parliament from 1840–41 and pleaded here as a lawyer from 1841–60. From 1876 to 1966, the building in the style of the Greek Revival (US variant of classicism ) served as the local courthouse of Sangamon County . Because of its close relationship with Abraham Lincoln, the building, which has since been greatly modified, was relocated as a museum to the approximate state of the mid-19th century. In fact, it was a demolition and a new building as a reconstruction for patriotic and museum purposes.
On July 4, 1961, the Old State Capitol was recognized as a National Historic Landmark . In 1985 the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places with reference number 85003178 .
