description

The building is isolated around two kilometers south of Johnstonebridge. It was built between 1820 and 1822 as part of the establishment of the road link between Carlisle and Glasgow . It was used for customs clearance along the route. An identical customs station is located south near the English-Scottish border at Gretna . The building was built by the eminent architect Thomas Telford , who was involved in planning the route. The work was carried out by John MacDonald .

The one-story building is no longer located directly on the main road, the A74 (M) , which runs about 100 m to the west. The B7076 runs directly in front of the house and runs parallel to the A74 (M) for long distances. The masonry consists of quarry stone, with building openings being lined and contrasting in color. The facades are whitewashed. On the east side there is an archway with three four-part lattice windows . The building closes with a slate hipped roof with a wide, central chimney. This is decorated with quatrefoil .
