history
In the early 18th century, the lands of Raehills north of Johnstonebridge were owned by William Johnstone, 1st Marquess of Annandale . Within the Clan Johnstone , from which the name of the village is derived, the lands were inherited. George Vanden-Bempde, 3rd Marquess of Annandale had the manor Raehills House built there in 1786 . The Johnstone Parish Church was built back in the 1730s and expanded in 1819. In 1881 the bridge over the Annan was built according to a design by Thomas Telford , which also contributed to the name of the town. The Old Tollbar Cottage comes from the same construction phase .
In the course of the 1961 census survey, 67 people were counted in Johnstonebridge.
