Old and St Andrews's Church

The Old and St Andrews's Church , also Montrose Parish Church , is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland in the Scottish town of Montrose in the Council Area Angus . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

history

There have been churches at the site for centuries. In 1791 the direct previous structure was demolished and today's Old and St Andrews's Church was built. The architect David Logan is responsible for their design . The building was built right next to the 17th century bell tower that was still used. In 1811 cracks in the masonry of the tower were discovered, after which the engineer Robert Stephenson was consulted. Stephenson did not see any acute danger to the structure, but suggested the construction of a new bell tower as soon as the financial situation permitted. After around £ 3,000 had been collected from parishioners, the old bell tower was demolished in 1831 and the current tower was built on August 1, 1832, based on a design by James Gillespie Graham . Two years later the work was completed. The style of the west facade was later adapted to the tower. In 1860 and 1885, the Old and St Andrew's Church was revised or expanded.
