Oldendorf (Esens)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oldendorf is part of the former municipality of Bensersiel , which is now part of the city of Esens . The place is located in the district of Wittmund , Lower Saxony .

In the Middle Ages, Oldendorf was a church village and was about 300 m from today's dike line. In 1420, Oldendorf is mentioned as a church location in the Stader Copiar, and the name appears in documents relating to the Marienkamp monastery in Esens in 1431. The village is said to have been destroyed in the storm surge of 1570. The rest of the parish was added to the church in Esens. Ceramic shards and church building materials were found in the outer depth of Bensersiel, which was dredged in 1938, proving that this place had been inhabited since the birth of Christ until the early modern period . The church building materials are boulder blocks, monastery format bricks and roof tiles , as are common in the region for Romanesque churches .
