Ole Krogh Andersen (born May 11, 1942 in Copenhagen ) is a Danish physicist and former director at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart .

Life

Ole Krogh Andersen studied electrical engineering and solid state physics and received his doctorate in 1969 from the Technical University of Denmark . In the same year he became a Research Associate at the University of Pennsylvania . In 1970 he became adjunct professor at the University of Copenhagen , two years later he was lecturer at the Technical University of Denmark . In 1978 he became a visiting professor at the University of Geneva , in the same year he became director and scientific member at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research. Since 1982 he has been an honorary professor at the University of Stuttgart . In 2012 he retired.

Ole Krogh Andersen made influential contributions to the numerical calculation of the electronic band structure of solids in the context of density functional theory (DFT). In particular, he developed the so-called linear methods Linear Augmented Plane Waves (LAPW) and Linear Muffin Tin Orbitals (LMTO). The so-called tetrahedron method can also be traced back to him and Ove Jepsen. For strongly correlated electronic materials, he and Vladimir I. Anisimov and Jan Zaanen proposed the DFT + U method . He and his co-workers applied these methods to a wide variety of materials, such as high-temperature superconductors and other metal oxides . According to Google Scholar, his roughly 250 scientific publications had been cited 46,000 times by 2019 .

Prizes and awards

In 1978 Ole Krogh Andersen received the Brinch Prize from the Danish Physical Society. In the same year he became a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society. Two years later he received the Hewlett-Packard Europhysics Prize from the European Physical Society. In 1982 he became a foreign member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and honorary professor for physics at the University of Stuttgart. In 1992 he became a foreign member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, a year later he was made a Fellow of the American Physical Society . In 2002 he was awarded the Ernst Mach Medal of Honor of the Czech Academy of Sciences . In 2008 he was awarded an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University .
