Oleh Turij

Oleh Jurijowytsch Turij ( Ukrainian Олег Юрійович Турій ; scientific transliteration Oleh Jurijovyč Turij ; born July 21, 1964 in Tswitowa ) is a Ukrainian church historian . Like most Western Ukrainians, he uses the non-patronymic spelling for his publications.

Born in 1964 in the village of Tswitowa in Kalush Rajon , Oleh Turij studied after graduating from school from 1981 to 1986 at the historical faculty of the Ivan Franko University in Lviv and received his doctorate there in December 1994 with a thesis on The Greek Catholic Church in Sociopolitical Affairs Life in Galicia from 1848–1867 . During his doctoral thesis, he initially taught history for three years at the Technikum in Kalusch , then worked for a year at the Iwan Franko Literature Museum in Lviv and was then a Senior Research Fellow at the Institute for Historical Research at the Iwan Franko University until 1998 . From 1994 to 2002, under Borys Gudziak, he was the deputy director of the Institute for Church History, the founding cell of the re-established Lviv Theological Academy and the later founded Ukrainian Catholic University . From 2002 to 2008 he was director of the Institute for Church History of the newly opened Ukrainian Catholic University, since then, in addition to his teaching activities, he has been the prorector of this university for questions of academic work and now corrects external relations. As a result of his position and language skills, Turij was and is the first Ukrainian speaker of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in the field of scientific research into church history and in ecumenical encounters with Ukrainians in the German-speaking area. He is now followed by younger Greek Catholic and Orthodox scholars such as Andriy Mykhalejko, Serhij Bortnyk, Cyril Hovorun and others.

Oleh Turij has two grown sons with his wife Switlana.

Turij's academic work revolves, on the one hand, on socio-political phenomena in Galicia in the second half of the 19th century ; he is particularly interested in the revolution of 1848/49. The second subject area is through the teaching activity and the international church contacts the church history of Ukraine and the current coexistence of the churches in Ukraine up to their impact on current socio-political processes. His management function brought among other things the editor function for the conference volumes of the "Brest Lectures" organized by the Institute for Church History and for the magazine "Arche" (ukr. Kovčeh), which was also started here, as well as other editing and translation activities. Research projects have taken him to Poland, Germany, Austria, Italy and the USA, among others. He worked as a visiting professor at the universities of Lublin, Innsbruck and Mainz.
