Oliver Ressler (* 1970 in Knittelfeld , Styria ) is an Austrian artist.

Life

Ressler carries out theme-specific exhibition projects, outdoor work and videos on the topics of capitalism , forms of resistance, social alternatives, racism and global warming. He lives in Vienna .

Installation "What is Democracy?"

Ressler's project “Alternative Economics, Alternative Societies” has so far been shown in 21 exhibitions, including solo exhibitions in Galerija Skuc, Ljubljana, 2003; Kunstraum Lüneburg, 2004; Centro Cultural Conde Duque , MediaLabMadrid, Madrid, 2004; Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Rijeka, 2005; Platform Garanti Contemporary Art Center, Istanbul, 2005, Museum of Contemporary Art, Novi Sad and Museum of Contemporary Art, Belgrade, 2005. "Alternative Economics, Alternative Societies" is also the title of his publication, which was published by Wyspa Institute of Art in Gdansk 2007 and the German version was published in 2008 under the title “Alternative Ökonomien, alternative Gesellschaft” in Promedia Verlag, Vienna.

Several projects were developed in cooperation. The project “Boom!” Shows the central contradictions of global capitalism (with David Thorne ), “European Corrections Corporation” the phenomenon of the privatization of prisons (with Martin Krenn ) and “What Would It Mean To Win?” The protests against the G8 Summit in Heiligendamm (with Zanny Begg). In collaboration with Dario Azzellini , the films "Venezuela from Below" (2004) and "5 Factories - Workers' Control in Venezuela" were made, which was shown in 2006 as a 6-channel video installation at the Berkeley Art Museum in the USA.

Ressler took part in 150 exhibitions, including the biennials in Prague (2005), Seville (2006), Moscow (2007) and Taipei (2008). For the Taipei Biennale 2008 he also curated an exhibition on the anti-globalization movement entitled “A World Where Many Worlds Fit”. In 2017 he took part in documenta 14 .

His video “This is what democracy looks like!” Was awarded first prize in the ZKM's International Media Art Prize in 2002.
