Olivier Fugen (born October 17, 1970 in Nice ) is a former French football player .

Career

Originally from Nice, Fugen was trained as a youth at OGC Nice in his hometown and was accepted into the club's reserve team in 1989, where he played regularly from then on. In 1991 he moved up to the second division team and came there in his first season on 22 appearances in the league. The early years of his career were marked by numerous injuries that made his way to a regular place difficult. It was therefore not until the 1994/95 season that Fugen was able to consolidate his role as a top performer in the team. This happened in his first season in the top French division, which Nice had achieved through promotion in 1994. With his team, Fugen fought twice to avoid relegation before he had to go to the second division in 1997. At the same time, the team played a strong season in the Cup, which led them to the final against EA Guingamp . Fugen was called up from the start, but after the 1-1 draw in regular time he was replaced by Arjan Vermeulen at the beginning of extra time . So he was not involved in the penalty shoot-out, which ended 4-3 and Nice secured the cup victory. This was, apart from the second division championship in 1994, the first and only title in Fugen's entire career. The cup success also brought the second division team a participation in the UEFA Cup , in which the defender was unable to participate due to injury.

With the expiry of his contract in 1998 he signed with the also second-rate Troyes Aube Champagne , which was renamed ES Troyes AC in 2000 . At the beginning he still ran for this and in 1999 had a share in the promotion to the first division. After that he didn't play at all due to an injury and missed his second international tournament with the UI Cup in 2001 , because at the same time he was only in the reserve team. In the same year, Fugen ended his active career at the age of 30. He then returned to his home region and was hired by AS Monaco as coach of the U-14 youth team.
