The olive-neck weaver ( Ploceus brachypterus ) belongs within the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of bunting weavers ( Ploceus ).
The species is considered by Avibase and the International Ornithological Union as a subspecies (Ssp.) ( Ploceus nigricollis brachypterus ) of the short-winged weaver ( Ploceus nigricollis ), Handbook of the Birds of the World lists this weaver as an independent species of olive-necked weaver ( Ploceus brachypterus ).
The Latin additional species comes from ancient Greek βραχύς brachys , German 'short' and ancient Greek πτερόν pteron , German 'wing' .
The bird is found in Africa in Gambia , Ghana and Guinea-Bissau .
The distribution area includes wooded habitats from tree-lined savannahs, gallery forests to clearings and forest edges.
features
The species is 15 to 17 cm tall and weighs between 21 and 39 g. The male has a narrow black eye stripe and a black throat patch in the breeding plumage, otherwise a yellow forehead, a golden-orange crown, the underside is also yellow. The upper side including the tail are olive green. The female has a black parting into the neck, the parting is yellowish to olive-colored. A broad yellow stripe over the eyes forms. The eye stripe extends into the neck area. There is no such thing as a simple dress. Fledglings are pale olive in color on top. The species also differs from the short-winged weaver in that it has a pale iris and an olive-colored neck; the black mask is wider.
The species is monotypical .
voice
The singing of the male is described as a short, fast and loud "wriou wriouu wizzz", the call as a sharp "chwit chwit", does not differ from the short-winged weaver.
Way of life
The diet consists mainly of insects .
The breeding season is between July and November in Senegambia , September in Guinea-Bissau, between September and October in Liberia, between January and September in Ghana, in July in Burkina Faso and between June and September in Nigeria.
Hazardous situation
The stock is not considered to be at risk ( least concern ).
