Olli Jalonen (born February 21, 1954 in Helsinki ) is a Finnish writer .

Life

Olli Jalonen lives with his family in Hämenlinna. His wife is the writer Riitta Jalonen.

Olli Jalonen's work has been awarded many prizes, including the Finlandia Prize. His books have been translated into several languages, including German. Jalonen studied social and literary sciences and obtained his PhD in 2006 with a dissertation on the association of writing from the University of Tampere .

Olli Jalonen's first work, the collection of novellas Unien tausta , was published in 1978 and was recognized as the best first work in Finland. In the novel Ilo ja häpeä (1981) the writer tells of his experiences as a press spokesman for the Indonesian embassy in Helsinki. The novel Hotelli eläville (1983) is about the ethics of science. It has won several awards in Finland and has also been published in Sweden, Norway and Estonia. Olli Jalonen's works often revolve around questions of conscience, for example with regard to the situation and responsibility of people in dictatorships and exceptional situations. Jalonen has written short stories and radio plays in which he reports on his experiences, including with North Korea and totalitarianism. These novellas appeared in Värjättyä rakkautta published in 2003, among others .

The author's main work is the extensive novel Yksityiset Täthtitaivaat (1999). It is a summary of the novel trilogy published in 1989-92, which has since been supplemented, on the sex of Betel, separated by politics, the sea and human relationships, over a century.

In 1990 Jalonen received the Finlandia Prize for the novel Isäksi ja tyttäreksi and in 2018 for the novel Taivaanpallo . He was also nominated for the Finlandia Prize in 1989 with Werk Johan ja Johan , in 2008 with 14 solmua Greenwichiin and in 2014 with Miehiä ja seineisiä . He was also nominated three times for the Nordic Council's Literature Prize. Of the other novels, Kenen kuvasta kerrot (1996) is an extensive work in which the biography of a woman is told through various literary styles. The siblings Yhdeksän pyramidia (2000) and Karatolla (2012) tell of a huge, modern pyramid building project in Europe and an interwoven love story. Poikakirja (2008) and Miehiä ja erisiä (2014) are about a boy growing up in Finland from the 1960s to the 70s. 14 solmua Greenwichiin (2008) tells of a reality competition in which the whole world is circled on the prime meridian that runs through Greenwich.

Jalonen has released radio plays and plays since 1985, a total of 15 pieces. He has also directed television plays on the Finnish state broadcaster, taught at the theater school and since 2000 has worked in land art projects.

Various novels by Olli Jalonen have been translated into German, Swedish, Norwegian, Estonian and Latvian. Individual novellas appeared in other languages. Jalonen completed advanced studies at Trinity College Dublin and worked in artist-in-residence programs, including the International Writing Program at the University of Iowa in 1982, in 1988 at LCB Berlin, 2010–2011 as writer-in-residence Residence Zurich and 2015 in the artist residence Chretzeturm in Stein am Rhein .
