Artist residence in Chretzeturm, Stein am Rhein

The Chretzeturm artist residence in Stein am Rhein in the canton of Schaffhausen was founded in 1999. In addition to the Lindwurm Museum, the Chretzeturm artist residence is a cultural institution of the Jakob and Emma Windler Foundation. Elisabeth Schraut was the curator from 2015 to 2019. Since October 2019 Helga Sandl has been the curator of the artist residency and cultural director of the Jakob and Emma Windler Foundation.

structure

Every year four international artists are given the opportunity to live and work in the Chretzeturm artist residence for three months. The scholarship is generally open to all disciplines. It is given by invitation. The scholarship is an attendance scholarship .

On the one hand, the scholarship is an instrument for promoting artists; on the other hand, the local and regional population should also have the opportunity to deal with current positions in contemporary art. At the beginning of the stay there has been a welcome aperitif since 2015, at which the artists are presented to the population, the form is open and is determined individually each time: short lecture, artist talk, short reading, etc. a. At the end of the stay there is an insight into the artistic work: exhibition, studio insight, reading, etc. During the stay, the artists are asked to write a blog. There are no further obligations associated with the scholarship.

Focus

Site-specific work 2016 to 2018

Since 2016, several artists have developed elaborate site-specific works during their stay: The Tunisian artist Sana Tamzini realized a light installation in the legendary Five-Minute Cave, which has cult status for the local population because of the test of courage associated with its crossing, Christina Kubisch sat with her explored the theme of water and presented the sound installation "Brunnenlieder" in the courtyard of the Lindwurm Museum. Denise Ritter recorded the sounds of Stein am Rhein in winter at a specific point between the Rhine and Burg am Klingenberg, where noises from earth and sky meet and create the sound composition "Altitude". The sound installation was made accessible in the usually inaccessible attic of the citizens' asylum. Parastou Forouhar created a series of staged photography on the topic of "Strangeness" with the title "The grass is green, the sky is blue and it is black ...", which is shown as an intervention in the permanent exhibition rooms of the Lindwurm Museum (since autumn 2017, Catalog). Susan Hefuna dealt with the subject of "half-timbered" during her stay. The result was the project MAPPING STEIN - an intervention in three acts - drawings, installation, performance and video, which could be seen in the shop window of the future cultural center and as an intervention in the Lindwurm Museum.

North Africa / Middle East

A special focus in the selection of artists as well as in the topics is also the conflict region of North Africa / the Middle East, which is particularly closely linked to European history. Sana Tamzini, Parastou Forouhar, and Susan Hefuna should be mentioned because of their origins, plus the authors Sherko Fatah and Rosa Yassin Hassan.

building

The Chretzeturm is a medieval tower, built around 1200, which was part of the first city fortifications. In the 15th century, the four-storey residential building extending into the tower body was built.
