Claudia Ott

Claudia Ott (* 1968 in Tübingen ) is a German Arabist , author , translator and musician .

Life

Claudia Ott studied Islamic Studies, Arabic Studies, Iranian Studies and other Orientalist subjects at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1986–88) and the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (1988–92). In 1998 she received her doctorate in Arabic studies with a thesis on Arabic epic ("Metamorphoses of the Epic") at the Free University of Berlin . From 1993 to 1998 she was a research assistant at the seminar for Semitic and Arabic studies at the Free University of Berlin. This was followed by a stay in Cairo to study Arabic music and musicological research (Academy of the Arts). From 2000 to 2013 she was a research assistant at the Department of Oriental Philology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg ; Since 2013 she has been a lecturer and associated member of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Göttingen .

Claudia Ott has been working regularly as an author and translator for various radio stations and newspapers since 1992. Since 2000 she has been working mainly as a freelance literary translator from Arabic.

Claudia Ott is a member of several international ensembles for oriental music and supervises her own programs with music and oriental literature. As a musician, translator and presenter, Claudia Ott has worked with important artists such as the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, the Göttingen International Handel Festival , the siren opera theater in Vienna , the Komische Oper Berlin , Senta Berger , Hannelore Elsner , Günter Grass , Ingo Schulze , Mahmud Darwish , Muhammad Munir, Abdo Dagher and Gamal al-Ghitany together. Among other things, she accompanied Günter Grass' visits to Yemen in 2001 and 2004 with music programs for the readings. As a part-time job, Claudia Ott acquired the C license for church music in 2001 and the B license for choral conducting in 2008 and has also been working as a choir director (Martinschor Beedenbostel) since 2003.

Since 2007 she has been chairwoman of the jury for the Coburg Rückert Prize . For her translation of Thousand and One Nights , Claudia Ott received grants from the German Translation Fund and a grant from the German Literature Fund. In 2011 she was awarded the Johann Friedrich von Cotta Prize for Literature and Translation from the City of Stuttgart . In 2013 it was nominated for the world premiere of One Hundred and One Nights for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in the “Translation” category.
