Susan Hefuna uses various artistic media in her work, such as drawing , photography , sculpture , installation , video and performance . Both her German and her Egyptian heritage are expressed, together with personal experiences, in her multi-layered works that build bridges between cultures and reflect their different traditions and peculiarities. Exploring cross-cultural codes, Hefuna consistently plays with the intention and effect of images in her work by creating abstract spaces and contexts that the viewer can fill with a wide range of meanings. The temporal and local indicators depend on the cultural and social reflections and projections of the respective observer.

A recurring inspiration for Susan Hefuna's work is the Maschrabiyya , a filigree lattice panel or window grille carved from wood or chiseled from stone, as found in traditional Egyptian architecture. This motif first appeared in Hefuna's drawings in layers of tracing paper in 1990 and in her photographs taken with a pinhole camera on the streets of Cairo in 1999. In 2003, she started working with traditional Egyptian artisans to create three-dimensional sculptural grid panels. Hefuna's first solo exhibition in Egypt in 1992 was a key experience. The motif of the Mashrabiya in her abstract photographs was immediately recognized by the Egyptian public. The viewer saw the real essence of her work and not its reflection, while in Germany her work was perceived as purely western-style abstract art. From then on, her work and her working method were increasingly stimulated by this double response. The international recognition of her drawings reached a climax in 2009 at the 53rd Venice Biennale , when around 300 of her multi-layered ink and pencil drawings were shown on tracing paper in the exhibition entitled “Fare Mondi” (“Making the World”) in the Giardini and the Arsenale were.

Hefuna's work has been shown in international exhibitions. The projects are documented in the elaborately designed “Pars Pro Toto” trilogy. The 3 volumes about Susan Hefuna's work were edited by Hans Ulrich Obrist and published by Kehrer Verlag . Other important publications about her work are Susan Hefuna: xcultural codes with a text by Negar Azimi, published by Kehrer Verlag 2004 and Susan Hefuna: navigation xcultural with texts by Tayfun Belgin and Leonard Emmerling, published by Kehrer Verlag 2001. In December 2010, Susan Hefuna's work is the cover story in Art Review , London. The article was written by Mark Rappolt. In December 2010, a text by Bettina Mathes about Susan Hefuna appeared in the magazine Flash Art. From 2010 to 2013 the artist cooperated with the choreographer Luca Veggetti for the project “Notationotations” between drawing and dance. The performance was premiered in September 2013 at the Drawing Center NYC .
