Oltan Gıda (Oltan Food), also Oltan Group , is a Turkish group of companies in the food industry. It is active in the country in the extraction, processing and marketing of hazelnuts . The Oltan Group has been owned by the Ferrero confectionery group since 2014 .

The product range of Oltan includes hazelnuts in the shell and the nut kernels in untreated form, roasted, bleached, chopped and / or sweetened, as flour and paste.
Oltan has a total of five production sites that process the raw material supplied by external regional growers (as of 2014):
- All five locations are equipped with shell crushers.
- Two locations (Trabzon and Düzce) are equipped with nut kernel sorting facilities
- A processing plant in Trabzon is fully integrated, which means that it covers all stages of production
Oltan also has storage capacities of 80,000 tons.
Around a third of all hazelnut production in Turkey comes from Oltan (as of 2013). In 2013 the company exported around 68,000 tonnes of this, mainly to Italy, England, France and Germany, but also to the USA, Japan, China, Australia, South Africa and Egypt. Customers are mainly large manufacturers of confectionery, ice cream and cakes containing chocolate; Ferrero is the largest customer.
history
The company was founded in Trabzon in 1984 by Kenan, Burhan and Orhan Veli Oltan and Şükrü Güngör Köleoğlu. The first shell crusher was located in the Çarşı bazaar district in the center of the port city on the Black Sea coast. They marketed the hazelnut kernels obtained internationally in the same year. In 1990 a plant for processing hazelnut kernels was set up in Esiroğlu , Maçka County , which started production the following year. The second crushing plant followed in 1994 in the same place. A third crushing plant was built in Düzce in 1996. In December of this year, Oltan was the first company in the industry to receive ISO 9002 certification. In 1998, the construction of a new production line doubled its integrated production capacity. In 2000, another crushing mill was built in Ordu. Oltan has been Turkey's largest hazelnut exporter since 2001. In 2002 the company was the first Turkish food manufacturer to be certified according to the high BRC standard, and in November 2002 it was certified according to ISO 9001: 2000. In 2004, Oltan opened its first cold storage facility for hazelnut kernels in the Arsin industrial area . From 2006 to 2008, the world's largest and most modern integrated processing center for hazelnuts was built in Arsin with an area of 15,000 m². At the same time, the processing facility in Esiroğlu was reorganized and modernized in 2007, including a laser-controlled sorting system. In 2008 the existing quality management was supplemented by a management system for food safety according to ISO 22000. In 2009, Oltan placed the order to build a sweet line at the Arsin site, and a praline and brittle line started production. In October 2010 the certification was updated to ISO 9001: 2008.
In the summer of 2014, the Italian confectionery group Ferrero, the world's largest hazelnut buyer, took over the Oltan Group, which had previously been family-owned, at an undisclosed price in order to secure the long-term supply of the ingredient contained in many of its products. Ferrero is one of the largest buyers of Turkish hazelnuts, in 2013 around 70% of the exports of Oltan went to Ferrero. The EU Commission approved the takeover in September 2014, even though it became the world's largest supplier of hazelnuts.
