The Olympic Ares was built by the Norwegian Kleven Verft AS as a special ship for offshore use with a focus on underwater support and construction work. It was designed for the general offshore market, propelled by azimuth propellers and equipped with the Kongsberg K-Pos DP-22 system for dynamic positioning. In addition to the azimuth drives, this includes 2 × Rolls-Royce bow tunnel radiators with 1370 kW each, a retractable Rolls-Royce radiator with 1200 kW and a rear tunnel radiator with 790 kW output. In addition, the ship was equipped with a moon pool , a 250 t heavy-duty crane, 2 ROVs and a helicopter platform.

The Olympic Ares was MeyGen project involved the installation of giant underwater current turbines in the north of Scotland. The MeyGen project is one of the world's largest projects to utilize the tidal currents.
