Olympic Broadcasting Services

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) is a company that was founded by the International Olympic Committee in May 2001 and is responsible for international coverage of the Olympic Games .

Tasks of the OBS

The main task of the OBS is to produce the international TV and radio signal (ITVR) and transmit it to broadcasters around the world. So that the signal can be used equally by the national broadcasters, it is necessary to generate images that are as neutral as possible and not aimed at specific players or nations, which is why the signal does not contain any comments or interviews. The broadcasters have the opportunity to use their own comments or interviews to tailor their reporting to the interests of their audience. Another task of the OBS is to provide the national broadcasters with premises and any necessary technology. Most of the premises are located in the International Broadcast Center (IBC). The international direction is also housed here. The OBS has a staff of 85 people from 21 different countries (as of December 2008). Many of these employees have been taken over by Beijing Olympic Broadcasting. The OBS headquarters are in Madrid .

Beijing Olympic Broadcasting

The work of the OBS began with the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . Beijing Olympic Broadcasting (BOB), a joint venture between OBS and the Beijing Organizing Committee, was founded for this purpose in 2004. Under the direction of the OBS, BOB was responsible for providing the image material. The images were forwarded to a total of 200 national broadcasters under the direction of Manolo Romero. The International Broadcast Center set up by the BOB, in which almost all television studios were located, covered around 80,000 m².

Olympic Broadcasting Services Vancouver

The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver were the first games where OBS was the sole producer of the footage. For this purpose, OBS founded Olympic Broadcasting Services Vancouver (OBSV) in December 2006. This sub-organization under the direction of Nancy Lee and Manolo Romero was responsible for the production of the pictures, but also for the establishment and maintenance of the International Broadcast Center Vancouver. This was around 20,000 m² in size and had a workplace for around 4,000 people.

Olympic Broadcasting Services London

Olympic Broadcasting Services London (OBSL), another OBS subsidiary, will be responsible for producing the images from the 2012 Summer Olympics in London . In addition, OBSL moved into an office building near London's Olympic Park in August 2009 to start planning the games. The OBSL is headed by the former Chief Technical Officer of the BBC Paul Mason.

Broadcast Training Program

Since the Olympic Games in 2010, the OBS has been organizing a training program for students from the fields of media and radio in the run-up to the Games . The aim is for the participants to gain practical experience working with experienced employees and thus enable them to make a good transition into media professions. To this end, workshops for the various areas of responsibility are held about a year before the start of the games . The areas of responsibility include:

Particularly successful students then have the chance to be taken over by the OBS and used during the games. In 2010, almost 600 students were successfully trained by OBSV.
