The two-man rowing regatta at the 1936 Summer Olympics took place on the Berlin-Grünau regatta route from August 11th to 13th .
Before the competition, the British David Burnford and Thomas Cree were the favorites for the Olympic victory . But the German duo Willi Eichhorn and Hugo Strauss were also given good chances. The two boats met in the run-up, the two Germans won with a lead of 20 seconds over the British boat, which was only third. The other two heats were won by the Poles and Hungarians, who had become European champions in 1935.
In the semi-finals, the British failed to the Argentines and could not qualify for the final. Thus the way seemed free for the German Olympic victory. However, it was the Danes Harry Larsen and Richard Olsen who initially took the lead in the finals due to incorrect steering of the German boat. Little by little the Germans were able to catch up and finally crossed the finish line 3.1 seconds ahead of the Danes. Bronze went to the Argentines Horacio Podestá and Julio Curatella , who won the first Olympic rowing medal for their country. Argentina protested about obstruction, but it was rejected.
