The rowing regatta in a four-man with a helmsman at the 1936 Summer Olympics took place on the Berlin-Grünau regatta route from August 12 to 14 .

Before the competition, the Swiss boat, which was represented by the Zurich Rowing Club, was the favorite for the Olympic victory. The crew was able to finish their preliminary run and qualify directly for the finals alongside the Dutch and the Germans. The semi-finals were won by France, Hungary and Denmark, which made it into the finals, although the times of the Americans and Uruguayans in the run-up to the French were significantly better than those of Hungary and Denmark.

In the final the Swiss led the race, but were overtaken by the Germans after about halfway through the race. The German boat, represented by the Mannheim rowing club Amicitia from 1876 , held the leading position and was thus able to defend the title from 1932. The Swiss held their second place and secured silver. In the battle for the bronze medal there was a close three-way battle between Hungary, the Netherlands and France, which the French won. The helmsman in the French foursome was Noël Vandernotte , who was only 12 years and 233 days old at the time of the final. His father Fernand Vandernotte and his uncle Marcel were also part of the crew.
