Olyra is a genus of Asian catfish that is mainly known from northeast India , Bangladesh and Myanmar . There is also a single record from Nepal and the species Olyra astrifera ,which was only described in 2013,occurs in southern Kerala (southern India).
features
Olyra catfish grow to a length of 5.8 to 14.5 cm and are elongated, scaly and unarmored. The head and muzzle are flattened. The eyes are small and overgrown with skin. The fish have eight barbels . The gill covers are inclined towards the front dorsal fin. The dorsal fin has 7 or 8 soft rays, hard rays are absent. The anal fin is supported by 15 to 23 rays . There is a low adipose fin located far back, just in front of the caudal fin. The pelvic fins have six rays. The pelvic girdle has a well-developed posterior outgrowth that is clearly separated from the anal fin. The caudal fin is bifurcated, with the upper lobe being much larger, or tapering to a point. The number of vertebrae is 48 to 53.
habitat
Olyra species are typically found in slow-flowing, shallow waters with muddy bottoms.
Systematics
The genus Olyra was described in 1842 by the British physician and zoologist John McClelland , who worked in India . It is often assigned to an independent family Olyridae , which only contains the genus Olyra and is therefore monotypical . However, phylogenetic studies showed that Olyra is a highly specialized genus of spiny catfish (Bagridae).
