Grandmaia Elwan

Omaia Elwan (born August 1, 1932 in Cairo ) is an Egyptian legal scholar and former academic director at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg .

Life

Elwan studied law at the University of Cairo , where he obtained his license en droit in 1953 . In 1954 and 1955 he also obtained the Diplome d'Etudes Supérieures de Doctorat in private law and public law in Cairo; at the University of Rennes he also acquired this degree in 1959 in Romance law and legal history. Subsequently, Elwan held within the framework of a research stay at the University of Heidelberg , where he in 1962 with magna cum laude for Dr. iur . PhD . Even after completing his doctorate, Elwan continued to research in Germany, supported by a grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation . From 1963 he worked as a research assistant at the Hamburg Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law , but returned to Heidelberg in 1964 to the Institute for Foreign and International Private and Business Law there, where he worked as Academic Director. From 1973 to 2011 worked as a consultant for the Arab states at the Max Planck Institute in Heidelberg for Comparative Public Law and International Law . In 1997 he was appointed Professor Emeritus by the University of Cairo. Since his retirement he has been giving a block lecture on Islamic law at Heidelberg University.
