economy
In Ombilin there are deposits of high-quality coal, the amount of which is estimated at 100 million tons. The coal, which had already been mined during colonial times, has been transported along the state spoor routes of the Sumatra west coast since 1891 . The lignite is mined in the open pit by the Indonesian state mining company PT Bukit Asam (PTBA) with Chinese support from the China National Technical Import and Export Corporation (CNTIC). PTBA operates other mines on Sumatra, including the lignite opencast mine in the Air Laya region near Tanjung Enim / South Sumatra.
