Tanjung Enim is a town in the south of Sumatra / Indonesia , characterized by lignite mining , on the banks of the Enim River, not far from the larger district town of Muara Enim , about 150 km west of Palembang , the capital of the South Sumatra Province (Indon .: Sumatra Selatan ).

In the vicinity of Tanjung Enim, at the foot of the volcanic mountain range of the Bukit Barisan , are the richest lignite deposits in Indonesia, which were developed by the Dutch and the Dutch company Shell during the colonial period from 1919 and were listed on the stock exchange after Indonesia's independence from 1950 , Indonesian company PT Bukit Asam (PTBA), which is largely owned by the Indonesian state, will be mined. The deposit, which arose around 23 million years ago in the Miocene and the subsequent Pliocene , is estimated to be over 6 billion tons of coal, of which around 1.5 billion appear to be minable. Currently only around 20 million tons are mined annually due to limited transport routes. For comparison: In the Garzweiler II opencast mine in the Rhineland , around 40 million tons are mined annually.

The coal is extracted in open-cast mining, using German technology since 1985: with bucket-wheel excavators, skimmers and conveyor belts. Technical advice was provided from 1980 to 1985 as part of a World Bank project by the Cologne-based company Rheinbraun Consulting (now RWE). PTBA operates a second opencast mine in Ombilin / West Sumatra northeast of the city of Padang , which was recently put back into operation with the help of Chinese technology.

The coal from Tanjung Enim is transported by rail for export to Palembang and Tarahan , a port on the Sunda Strait. On the other hand, the unusually high-quality, high-calorie and low-ash brown coal due to volcanic influences is sold on the domestic Indonesian market and - mainly in Java - converted into electricity.

Starting in 2017, a new railway line is to connect Tanjung Enim with a second port to be built in the province of Lampung on the Sunda Strait alongside Tarahan. In 2012, a contract worth USD 4.8 billion was signed with the China Railway Group to build and maintain this railway line.

In an interview in February 2013, the managing director of PTBA, Milawarma, stated that PTBA wanted to invest more in the field of power generation.
