On farm research

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On-farm research (OFR) is applied research in the field of agricultural science , which is carried out together with the farmer on his cultivated land. Existing cultivation practices are analyzed with the help of certain test arrangements. With new techniques and sustainable approaches, the cultivation method is to be realigned from an ecological and economic point of view, thereby improving the production conditions of the plant cultivation company .

Definitions, theory, scientific discussion

In a research article from 2005 it says on this topic that "the goal [...] is research oriented towards the questions of the farmer, which can also be carried out with and by the farmers themselves."

The term on-farm research was originally brought into being as an international research approach, primarily to develop a method for establishing research on cultivation methods or land use (cropping systems) as a research topic (cropping systems research). The research approach should also create a basis for the selection of suitable research methods to improve cultivation techniques or land uses that the farmer can ultimately support.

An early definition from 1989 is also provided by the Alley Farming Network for Tropical Africa (AFNETA). There it says accordingly, “On-farm research is an indispensable tool for the development and verification of agriculture-related technologies. On-farm research (OFR) can be defined in its simplest way as research that is carried out on the cultivated land and the immediate environment of the farmer. ”Based on this definition, the authors identify four key elements:

A sub-concept of on-farm research is site- specific field cultivation (precision farming). In viticulture precision viticulture .

A broad scientific discussion took place in Germany under the name preagro , as well as the follow-up project preagro II .

Research projects

The Chamber of Agriculture of the State of Schleswig-Holstein carried out a multi-year research project on on farm research and published a statement on it.
