Oncopterus darwinii is a species of flatfish that occurs in the southwestern Atlantic from the coast of the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina to the Gulf of San Matías in Argentina, where it lives at depths of 20 to 80 meters.

features

Oncopterus darwinii is usually about 25 cm long; the maximum length is 30 cm. The fish are light brown in color and patterned with numerous small white dots. There are also some larger white spots, especially on the sides of the body. After the metamorphosis, the eyes are on the right side of the body. The dorsal fin begins in front of the eyes, just above the nostrils on the blind side. The sideline runs in a clear semicircular arc around the pectoral fins and then branches into numerous branches that run towards the dorsal fin. The first ray of the dorsal fin is hard, enlarged, curved and flexible. There is also a sting in front of the anal fin, which is particularly well developed in juvenile fish. The pelvic fins on the eyes and blind sides are asymmetrical. The ventral fin on the side of the eye is much further forward than that on the blind side.

Systematics

The species and genus were first described in 1874 by the Austrian zoologist Franz Steindachner and the species was named in honor of the British naturalist Charles Darwin . The kind belonged to early September 2019 the South Pacific flounder (Rhombosoleidae), but was then placed in a separate family, since it has been found that the way the sister group of the families of the southern flounder existing (Achiropsettidae) and South Pacific flounder clade is.
